County Reserve League Borough gained another valuable three points with an easy win against a Blandford side who battled hard but offered no real threat; the score line flattered the visitors as Borough squandered numerous chances with a mixture of the woodwork, goalkeeping and poor finishing evident. After a cagy opening Borough fashioned a chance in the 6th minute when following great work from TOWNSEND & DE BEN the resulting cross was deflected away for a corner. Borough took the lead in the 13th minute after a through ball from BALL found its way to PORTER who took full advantage of a defenders slip, to slot home 1-0. Moments later and DE BEN saw his shot well saved after being put through by TOWNSENDS piece of skill. PORTER tried the spectacular when trying to convert DE BENS deep cross in the 19th minute. Alas it did not come off!!!! Borough were dominating play at this stage and TOWNSEND & PORTER were working well upfront for Borough without finding the target. On the half hour Blandford secured a corner and from the resulting kick their forward headed over when unmarked. Again PORTER went close in the 31st minute but failed to find the target as did DE BEN in the 34th minute when well placed. RUDD went close with a header following great work from MADGEWICK as Borough continued to press for a second, however with the score line still at 1-0, Blandford felt they could still get something from the game and GRIFFIN was forced to defende well in the 42nd minute to deny a Blandford forward who was well placed. HALF TIME POOLE BOROUGH RES 1, BLANDFORD UTD 0. Giles & Sean demanded a quick start to the half from their players and that is what they got as Borough looked to get further goals to kill off the game, TOWNSEND going close in the 49th minute, however he shot over. Borough continued to press forward and PORTER nearly added to the tally as his own perseverance saw him bundle through 3 challenges only to see his shot go agonisingly wide. Once again PORTER headed wide when well placed in the 62nd minute following further good work from TOWNSEND. Borough were so nearly gifted a goal by the visiting keeper in the 70th minute when he fumbled a cross onto his own line, moments later and DE BEN broke free, and unselfishly squared the ball to TOWNSEND whose shot was well saved by the keeper. TOWNSEND though made up for his miss almost immediately when he bundled the ball in from close range following a HEBDON header from a corner 2-0 This goal should off signalled further strikes as Borough now played with a bit more freedom and should of seen the score increased in the 76th minute when TOWNSEND was fouled in the box, however his resultant penalty was saved and the follow up was put over the bar. Undeterred Borough continued to press and TOWNSEND again went close minutes later, however the visiting keeper pushed the shot onto the post and PORTER unfortunately could not convert the rebound as he slipped at the vital moment. Again PORTER was to be frustrated as his shot in the 81st minute came back of the bar with the keeper stranded. Hebrons header was saved in the 85th minute as Borough laud siege to the Blandford goal but alas no more goals were forthcoming as the game petered out. A rueful Giles was left to contemplate what might have been in terms of a big win which may have been important in terms of goal difference at the end of the season, however it was another 3 points to the tally and he could not fault the effort and application shown by the whole squad. With 6 games to go and sitting atop the reserve league, it is up to our 2 main contenders SHERBORNE & HOLT to win their games in hand, good luck to them !!!! |
