Dorset County Reserve League

Borough continued with their good recent run of results by claiming a thrilling last minute victory at Chickerell, Borough showed more determination and better fitness to win the game after a disappointing first half performance where they were decidedly second best.

Played at Chickerell’s infamous “Stalls” ground, Borough attacked downhill in the first half but were slow out of the blocks as the home team took the game to Borough early chances came and went for Chickerell. KNIGHT saved well in the 10th minute with a great reaction stop, however he was left stranded in the 13th minute when a Chickerell forward hit an opportunistic shot over the keeper and into the net 0-1.

Back came Borough and following a quickly distributed ball from KNIGHT, STONE controlled well and slotted home past the advancing keeper 1-1.

Borough continued to struggle as they could not find any cohesive form, they were not winning challenges and were continually put under pressure from a Chickerell side who sensed they could get more goals, and so it proved in the 29th minute when a deep cross into the Borough box was failed to be cleared, the ball fell to a forward who shot home 2-1.

Borough’s frustrations continued to grow as what little chances were created were not taken as both STONE & PORTER, who both were working very hard, missed with their efforts.

HALF TIME CHICKERELL UTD RES 2, POOLE BOROUGH RES 1.

The “Away” dressing room was not for the feint hearted at half time as Giles & Sean set about sorting out their side and to all the players credit, they realised they had let themselves down in the first half and were determined to give it a go in the second, and so it proved as Borough dominated from the restart as they got their act together and found some form.

Borough got off to a good start as STONE again used his pace to get clear of the defence only to see hiss shot go narrowly wide, however Chickerell should of killed the game off in the 55th minute when a ball found its way across the box to a completely unmarked player on the 6 yard line who then somehow managed to miss with the goal at his mercy .

This seemed to galvanise Borough as they upped a gear, chances continued to come and go as STONE, MULVEY, PORTER and MADGEWICK all went close. With 10 minutes to go Borough made their last substitution when TOWNSEND came on to play up front alongside Porter & Stone with Borough reverting to a 3-4-3 formation, MOLYNEUX went on another forward run only to see his cross cut out for a corner, and from that corner in the 85th minute, TOWNSEND managed to head home to claim the equaliser 2-2.

Borough now had the bit between their teeth as they chose not to sit back and take the draw, instead they went in search of the winner and this duly came in the 89th minute when TOWNSEND set up PORTER whose shot found its way in off the post to spark wild scenes as he was buried under an avalanche of Borough players 3-2.

Giles was understandably proud of his players reaction in the second half and paid tribute to their resolve to get a result made more important by Sherborne finally losing a game at Gillingham, he was very disappointed in their first half showing, both Giles & Sean know there is still a lot of hard work ahead in the remaining games, but if the side could somehow find a way to put in performances like they did in the second half today, from the start of matches they will stand themselves in good stead for the remaining 7 games off the season. Well done to all.
