County Reserve League Defeat was tasted for the first time this season when Borough succumbed to a very workman like Chickerell who took their chance when it was presented and then defended their lead to take all 3 points. Enforced changes due to injuries and non availability meant 5 changes were made to the side, however Giles refused to use this as an excuse for the below par performance as the side that played had more than enough about it to get a result. Borough settled the quicker and early shots went close from IGLEWSKI & MADGEWICK, Chickerell were very snappy in the tackle and from a resulting free kick to Borough TOGHILL drew a smart save from the opposition keeper. Chickerell then started to get a foot hold into the game, FARNON defended well under pressure in the 25th minute, moments later and HEBDON blocked a shot on the line after a quickly taken free kick nearly caught the Boro defence out. However in the 42nd minute Chickerell took the lead when following a needlessly conceded corner, the ball found its way to the far post, the Borough defence were static and watched as the ball was hooked back into the net 0-1 Borough appeared shocked and were relieved to hear the half time whistle. HALF TIME POOLE BOROUGH RES 0, CHICKERELL UNITED RES 1. Following a frank half time chat, Borough came out for the second half appearing to be up for the challenge, once again they were slow out of the blocks as KNIGHT reacted well in the 46th minute when smartly saving from the Chickerell forward. This finally appeared to galvanise Borough as first IGLEWSKI and then PORTER saw good chances well saved by the visiting keeper. Again Borough took the game to Chickerell and were playing good passing football, however the final ball and shot were not good enough, Chickerell offered little, however their lead was nearly doubled when FARNON headed the ball against his own bar in the 71st minute following a corner. KNIGHT again saved well minutes later to keep Borough in the game, as the match drew on Borough appeared to run out of ideas as they continued to fall short in front of goal and HEBDON should of done better with a header from a corner in the dying minutes. Alas it was not to be as Borough slipped to a disappointing defeat. Giles & Sean were both disappointed in the result and the attitude shown from certain squad players in the lead up to the game, although the side battled well and tried to move forward it fell down in the final third, which will be an area that will be looked at as soon as possible, Giles did pay tribute to the side for putting together an 11 game unbeaten League & Cup run and has challenged his whole squad to start another one, beginning next week at Sherborne, which it a very important game. The whole side will need to demonstrate their ability to respond to this defeat and be more ruthless in attack, its fine creating the number of chances we have been doing, but we are not putting the ball in the net and we are being punished, the taste of defeat was not nice !!!!!! |
