Dorset County Reserve League
Saturday 17th January 2009

After hastily re arranging the venue to Kington Magna as Gillingham’s Harding lane venue was waterlogged in the morning, the decision to accept was fully justified as Poole Borough deservedly ran out winners in a keenly contested match in which both sides played their part by playing good football.

Gillingham forced the early pace with their quick passing play and an early corner came to nothing, back came Borough and STONE on the 4th minute was denied by the home defence. PORTER was unlucky in the 12th minute when his lob just went over after seizing on a poor goal kick.

Gillingham then had a passage of play that put Borough under pressure only a last ditch tackle from WATSON in the 26th minute and moments later a close range save from KNIGHT saw the deadlock remain.

Back came Borough with efforts from DE BEN & MADGEWICK both being well saved. As the half drew to a close Gillingham pushed forward and MOLYNEUX had to cover in the 41st minute with a home forward bearing down on goal, RUDD responded with a snap shot following a corner in the 44th minute, however his shot was deflected wide.

HALF TIME GILLINGHAM TOWN RES 0, POOLE BOROUGH RES 0.

The game was there for the taking nut only if one side wanted it more and so it proved as Borough stuck to their game plan and forced the play in the second half and direct from from the restart RUDD had a further chance go begging,

Gillingham were reduced to long range efforts and following an attempt in the 52nd minute MADGEWICK went down the other end but saw his shot go over, while WATSON squandered a free kick in the 55th minute when in a good position.

Back came Gillingham and following a great through ball that dissected the Borough defence their forward was 1 on 1 with KNIGHT who, stood up well and blocked the resultant shot, a let off for Borough !! STONE responded with an effort in the 59TH minute whilst PORTER shot over in the 64th minute when well placed.

Borough remained patient and started to dominate proceedings as they were finding more space down the flanks, PORTER should of done better in the 75th minute when he received a great ball from WATSON he controlled on his chest, but dragged his shot wide.

However in the 80th minute PORTER made up for his earlier miss when he superbly shot home to give Borough a deserved lead 1-0

Gillingham tried to respond as they won a series of free kicks and corners, all to no avail, and with the clock running down PORTER launched another attack after receiving the ball from MADGEWICK and following his cross into the box STONE was there to smash home and secure the points 2-0

This was a great away win against a very well organised side who tried to play good football at all times. Both Giles & Sean were proud of their teams efforts and were more pleased that the side played to a set plan and were patient throughout the game, both managers were confident the goals would come and so it proved, all in all a good days work.
