County Reserve League Poole Borough lost their 100% record to a very well organised Gillingham side who looked very bright and lively, especially in the first half where Borough were decidedly second best, it appeared that Borough were off the pace and created their own problems with some poor decision making, however, that said after half time Borough were decidedly the better side and deserved to get all 3 points, only good goalkeeping and at least 3 clearances off the line kept the score line at zero. Borough started well with BALLs shot going well over in the 2nd minute. Back came Gillingham whose forward play forced a series of corners, on 15 minutes only a last ditch block from FORSTER saved borough, On 25 minutes it was Boroughs turn to force a series of corners, however the Gillingham keeper remained resolute. KNIGHT in the Poole goal was forced into action in the 32nd minute when he saved well after good Gillingham work. Borough were forced into making an early change when WOLDON pulled up with an injury to his back, Borough at this stage were trying to force the play as too many mistakes were evident, the Gillingham midfield were at this stage running proceedings however the Borough defence held firm until the break. HALF TIME POOLE BOROUGH RES GILLINGHAM TOWN RES 0 0 Borough came out a different side after the break with their ears still ringing from their half time team talk, and they quickly forced a good chance for DE BEN in the 48th minute, whose shot went close, further chances came for PORTER, MULVEY and RUDD as Borough stepped up the pace and forced Gillingham onto the back foot, Borough still had to be vigilant as Gillingham posed problems on the break with FORSTER & MOLYNEUX having to be alert in the 71st & 74th minutes respectively. As the game wore on Borough pressed and in the space of the last 15 minutes saw 3 efforts cleared of the line from a HEBDON header and shots from PORTER & MADGEWICK. Borough continued to press but time ran out and the game ended in a draw. Giles & Sean were disappointed with the first half performance but could not fault the team for taking on board the comments at half time and going out and giving a vastly improved second half showing. A second successive clean sheet was a well earned bonus on the day and after the game, the whole side was disappointed their possession in the second half did not result in any goals being scored. Both Giles & Sean will be looking for a positive response to this draw away at Wincanton next week-end from the whole squad. |
