After having more than matched their Dorset Premier League opposition for the majority of the game, Borough’s second string were disappointed to be taken to a replay, but they can feel more than proud that they proved there was no difference in class between themselves and their near neighbours.

Borough started the brighter and on four minutes Adam Watson came close with a curling free kick which was collected by the home keeper. Four minutes later the Hammers appeared to have fashioned a break through, but Kieran Mulvey was back quickly to execute an excellent tackle to deny the final shot.

With Hamworthy beginning to look the more dangerous Andy Knights make a fine save at full stretch to palm away a rising drive from Gary Clarke on 13 minutes and 10 minutes later Dan Molyneaux got back well to make a telling tackle as the visiting defence appeared to have been breached.

Back came Borough and the home keeper did well to divert wide a fierce downward header from Ken Strong on 28 minutes while four minutes later Lee Madgewick sent Tim Porter through, but a defender got in quickly to deny the shot.

Five minutes before the break another Borough attack saw Kieran Mulvey carve out some space down the left, but his shot from a tight angle went narrowly wide.

Half Time 0-0

Both teams increased the tempo after the break and Borough came close to opening the scoring on 52 minutes when Luke DeBen collected the ball from a corner and slipped a pass to Strong in the goal area but his close range shot was deflected wide. However it was the Hammers who took the lead two minutes later when a home striker got in front of Knights to head a cross from the right over the keeper and into the net. 1-0

On 69 minutes the woodwork saved Hamworthy as Mulvey swung in a corner from the right which the home keeper got a hand to, managing to divert the ball onto his right hand post. But a minute later Knights was in action again, making a fine reaction save to palm a close range header from a free kick over the bar.

The breakthrough finally came for Borough on 77 minutes as Mulvey fired in a low free kick from the right hand edge of the area which beat the home keeper inside his near post. 1-1

The impetus was now with the Hornets, helped when the Hammers went down to 10 men with five minutes of normal time remaining, when a defender picked a second yellow card and Borough nearly sealed victory on the stroke of full time when Strong collected a loose ball from a corner but his shot from point blank range was cleared off the line.

Full Time 1-1

Borough dominated the extra time period and Aaron Woldon came close after only four minutes when a deep cross picked him out in front of goal, but his header was tipped over the bar by the keeper. The Hammers carved out their only chance of the additional period on 7 minutes when a counter attack resulted in a low shot from the edge of the area which forced Knights into a scrambling save down by his right hand post, but apart from that the home side remained firmly on the back foot.

After the change around Jack Farrow found himself clear through after latching onto a wayward defensive header, but he shot wide with only to keeper to beat. Borough then forced a series of four successive corners leaving the Hammers to defend desperately and from one of the flag kicks Strong struck a stunning volley from 20 yards out which forced an fine reaction save from the keeper as he somehow managed to turn the shot over the bar.

With time running out the home keeper was in action again to divert a shot wide from Woldon, leaving the Dorset Premier League relieved to hear the final whistle and the chance to regroup for the replay.
