County Reserve League Following a blank week due to Sherborne calling off last weeks game, Borough faced their sternest test of the season when they faced undefeated Holt United, what followed was a superb game that Borough deservedly won with a brand of fast attacking football that Holt could not handle. Following their defeat last time out to Chickerell, changes were made to the starting line up with debuts being given to RYAN MOORE & LUKE STONE, both these players were to have a major influence on the game, KARL GRIFFIN was given the job of man marking Holts prolific scorer, a job he did admirably and he nullified that threat. Giles demanded a fast start and that what happened when Borough put Holt onto the back foot from the off, Stone showing great pace hit the bar in the 3rd minute following a great ball from Moore. Minutes later and Stones shot was blocked for a corner while Ball had a shot saved following a great run in the 11th minute. In the 13th minute the shoreline changed when following great play by Moore, his ball found STONE whose shot found the back of the net 1-0 Holt were shocked and minutes later it got worse for them when Porter seized on an error and found STONE to slot home 2-0 Holt made tactical changes as they tried to get back into the game and in the 28th minute Knight acrobatically tipped over a volley following a series of corners for Holt. However minutes later he was well beaten when a Holt player picked the ball up in midfield, moved forward and shot from fully 30 yards, a great finish !!! 2-1 Holt had the bit between their teeth however Boroughs defence weathered the storm and slowly re-asserted themselves on the game, Madgewick went close with a curling shot following great work from Porter, while in the 44th minute Knight again preserved the lead with a point blank save. Back came Borough and following great interplay between Rudd & Stone, the latters cross was headed home by RUDD to re-establish Boroughs 2 goal lead. 3-1 HALF TIME POOLE BOROUGH RES 3, HOLT UNITED RES 1. Both sides started the half quickly as they tried to gain the upper hand, slowly Holt took the game to Borough, however they were continually frustrated as Griffin and the Borough defence held firm. Hebdon blocked a goal bound shot in the 63rd minute, while Knight again was forced into a save on 66 minutes following good Holt pressure. Mulvey on 70 minutes launched an attack down the left, his cross field ball to Stone saw the Holt keeper give away a needless penalty as he upended the Borough forward, up stepped STONE to complete his hat trick 4-1 This goal finally knocked the stuffing out of Holt as they were reduced to long range efforts as the clock drew down, Borough had further chances for De Ben & Porter to increase their lead, but both shots were well saved. At the final whistle, both Giles & Sean paid tribute to their team who stood up to the challenge Holt posed, this result would send a clear message out to the rest of the league that Borough are a good side and are very much in the mix this season. Their desire and determination to gain a positive result were a credit to the whole side. The team selection and tactics were spot on with LUKE STONES hat trick and KARL GRIFFINS man of the match award testament to that, competition for places is tight at the moment and only players who are fully committed to the cause will keep their places !!!!! |
