Dorset County Reserve League
Saturday 18th October 2008

Borough showed a dogged determination to grind out a hard fought victory against a large, physical and well organised Portland side.

Both sides started the game in a cagy manner and it wasn’t until the 10th minute that the first real chance came, however WATSON’S cross went over from a good position, Portland, who adopted the long ball game throughout nearly caught the defence out when a long ball was mis judged by KNIGHTS only to see the free ball knocked out for a corner in desperation.

Borough were trying to force the play which resulted in possession being given away to easily, it took until the 25th minute for the first real piece of good play from the Hornets, as a fast flowing move resulted in RUDD narrowly heading past the post. This appeared to wake Borough up as they began to dictate play, DE BEN went close in the 31st minute as did Porter whose turn and shot in the 36th minute was saved by the keeper.

Borough could not let their defensive concentration lapse as Portland nearly caught them out in the 42nd minute, however the Portland forward dragged his shot well wide. Another long ball in the 44th minute, again nearly embarrassed KNIGHTS, but for a last ditch block/clearance from HEBDON.

HALF TIME POOLE BOROUGH RES 0, PORTLAND UNITED RES 0.

Portland came out the quicker and quickly forced a corner which was dealt with by the Borough defence, the large crowd did not have to wait to long to see a goal when following a great run and cross by MULVEY into the near post, saw PORTER head on to RUDD who smashed the ball home into the roof of the net 1-0,

This goal galvanised Borough as they continued to put Portland on their back foot, further chances came for PORTER & MULVEY whose efforts were held by the Portland keeper. Mid way through the half Borough forced a series of 4 corner’s all of which went close with an amount of “pin ball wizard” evident.

Again PORTER & MULVEY were guilty of misses in the 80th & 82nd minute and with time running out, Portland continued to look for an equaliser, however the Borough defence held firm amidst the expected barrage.

Giles & Sean were extremely pleased with the sides battling qualities shown on the day and commented that some of their players “Came of age” whilst both managers would like to win games with flowing passing & movement, like shown at Blandford, they conceded that winning ugly is a part of football and this result was an important win.

Well done to the whole squad for their efforts, bring on Sherborne !!!
