More Photosls conceded.

The eagerly awaited top of the table clash saw the proverbial “Game of two half’s” as Borough dominated proceedings in the first half only to see Sherborne control the second period, and the Hornets two goal advantage at the break was overturned, much to the visitors frustration.

A quick start and high tempo was instructed from the beginning and this duly happened as Borough took the game to their opponents. PORTER went close in the 5th minute following good work from BALL. KNIGHTS reacted well in the 11th minute to save from a Sherborne forward, while HEBDON also preserved the score with a great tackle on the edge of the box in the 12th minute.

Back came Borough and PORTER again went close following great work from STONE. Borough tactics of using width were showing promise as more and more attacks were launched and it was in the 25th minute following a superb team move that culminated in a quality ball from MADGEWICK to STONE which saw the latter slam home to give Borough a deserved lead 1-0

Borough’s tails were up as Sherborne seemed to lose composure as Borough pressed for a second. This duly arrived in the 31st minute when the hard work by PORTER in securing the ball when he appeared to be fouled in the box saw the ball break to STONE who powered home from close range 2-0

Sherborne by this stage realised they would need to improve as they set about trying to reduce the deficit, only good defending notably by FORSTER and safe goalkeeping prevented any goals being conceded.

HALF TIME SHERBORNE tOWN RES 0, POOLE BOROUGH RES 2.

Borough were expecting Sherborne to come out of the traps quickly and so it proved as the hosts stepped up a gear and took the game to Poole. In the 48th minute KNIGHT saved well and moments later the home side had the ball in the net only to see it chalked off for an offside decision. Borough breathed a sigh of relief again Sherborne kept pressing but the defence held firm.

Borough were forced into changes as WATSON had to leave the field of play and the pressure Sherborne were exerting finally paid dividends in the 63rd minute when a cross into the box was at first half cleared only for the ball to be flicked in 2-1

The goal clearly rattled Borough as they retreated and conceded a series of corners and from one of these in the 65th minute Sherborne drew level when the smallest player on the pitch headed home unopposed for the equaliser - a poor goal to concede. 2-2

At this stage there looked like being only one winner, however Borough re-grouped and went in search of the winner, chances fell to both sides with a goalmouth scramble entailing 3 efforts in the 86th minute being the closest Borough came, whilst at the other end efforts went close on 2 occasions with MOLYNEUX clearing off the line late on.

At the final whistle Giles was relieved to have gained a valuable point although he was disappointed to have conceded 2 soft goals from 2-0 up, to let Sherborne back into the game. Both he & Sean felt that half time came at the right time for Sherborne who were clearly rattled at that stage, however Giles paid tribute to the home side who demonstrated what a good side they are in battling back to preserve their unbeaten record. The first 45 minutes were a credit to all the players who showed massive amounts of belief and desire, it was just a shame that they could not see the job through to the end – what might have been !!!!
