Dorset County Reserve League
Saturday 6th September 2008

Borough got their new season off to the perfect start with a well deserved win against their visitors from Swanage, played against the back drop of inclement weather, but the Borough pitch stood up well in the conditions.

The game got off to a lively start with the visitors getting on the front foot early, SHEAR was called into action in the 8th minute when he saved well at his near post. Borough’s first clear chance came on 10 minutes when a long throw found DE BENEDICTUS whose shot was comfortably saved, moments later and SALDARRIAGGA found himself in the clear only to produce a weak shot.

Borough were now settling to the task and were enjoying the lions share of possession. The post came to Swanages rescue when another good move saw SALDARRIAGGA’s shot rebound away to safety, on 37minutes a good move involving MULVEY & WATSON saw a chance fall to RUDD, who shot well over.

However the score line changed in the 40th minute when following another long throw from MULVEY who found SALDARRIAGGA in the box, he turned quickly and fed DE BENEDICTUS to slam home 1-0 it was no more than Borough deserved, further chances fell to both MULVEY & HEBDON, but their efforts went wide.

HALF TIME POOLE BOROUGH RES – SWANAGE TOWN & HERSTON RES 1 – 0

Swanage again came out of the traps quicker and took the game to Borough who weathered the anticipated early storm, with the defence ably marshalled by GRIMASON & HEBDON, and if Swanage did break through, SHEAR was there to save, notably from chance in the 48th and 55th minutes when Swanage pressed.

Once again as the half progressed Borough began to dominate the game as chances continued to be created and with a little more composure in front of goal the lead could have been increased. It took until the 64th minute to see an increase, when WOLDON controlled a long clearance superbly, he checked his defender before curling an exquisite finish into the corner 2-0

Borough continued to press and further chances went begging from PORTER, back came Swanage and against the run of play their large !! midfielder hit a piledriver that deflected of HEBDON and past a stranded SHEAR 2-1

Back came Borough as WOLDON saw his shot blocked by the Swanage defence, Swanage continued to look for an unlikely equaliser and on 79minutes only a last ditch tackle from HEBDON prevented it from being so, Borough killed the game off in the 86th minute when an excellent run by MADGEWICK saw him bravely beat the keeper to the ball, and his centre was despatched home by WOLDON 3-1 The same player had a chance moments later to seal a well deserved hat trick but he put his shot wide.

Both Sean & Giles were delighted with the win, a lot of positives were taken from the game, with a few areas that need improving, the challenge to the players now is to start a winning streak as winning breeds confidence, both accepted that our opposition will get phases of the game but both will be looking for quicker starts from the kick off and after half time. All in all a good days work.
