County Reserve League Played on a bitterly cold afternoon, Borough deservedly won the game with a performance to warm their supporters in attendance, Borough controlled the game for vast periods and played some quality, incisive football with the 2 wide players dominant down the wings, coupled with the midfield dominating play a comfortable afternoon was had. Being the first game back after the festive break, borough acquitted themselves well from the start as the took the game to Wareham, Rudd went close with a shot in the 3rd minute, moments later and a series of Borough corners came to nothing. Borough were stretching the play and exploiting the space in behind both Wareham full backs who endured a torrid afternoon at the hands of Stones speed and Mulveys & Madgewicks all round play and it was from the latters deep cross in the 13th minute that saw STONE rise to head home 1-0. Further chances fell to Stone and Mulvey, but they put their chances wide of the mark. Wareham offered very little, however a combination of Knight and then Hebdon had to be alert in the 33rd minute to deny a goal scoring chance. Back came Borough and after another series of corners, Watson drifted one in and it evaded everyone, but cannoned back of the angle of post & crossbar. With the half running out further chances went begging for Stone & Rudd. HALF TIME : POOLE BOROUGH RES 1 WAREHAM RANGERS RES 0 After introducing some new players, Wareham showed more endeavour as they took the game to Borough at the start of the half and Griffin did well to put in a last ditch tackle in the 47th minute. However a quick passage of play involving Mulvey and Watson saw a pass through to STONE who slotted home 2-0. This knocked Wareham for six as they appeared to lose focus and moments later their keeper made a rash decision in charging out of his area to try and intercept a long ball, Gallagher easily beat the keeper to the ball and his precise cross from a tight angle was calmly side footed home by the oncoming MULVEY, a great team goal from start to finish. 3-0. The game by now was over, the only way Wareham would get back into the game would be from a mistake and so it nearly proved when Hebdon was caught in possession, this resulted in a needless free kick being conceded, luckily the subsequent shot went over. Once again Borough pressed and in the 68th minute MADGEWICK beat the off-side trap to collect the ball and finish neatly 4-0. Back came Wareham who forced a goalmouth scramble as the ball played pin ball in the area. Further chances came for Porter (x2) and Mulvey, however these amounted to nothing. Giles & Sean were delighted with the whole teams effort and commitment shown on the day, the whole squad demonstrated a desire and attitude to win the game, particularly pleasing was the fitness level of the team considering the festive break. They have been further challenged to continue performing to their high standards in performance for the remaining 11 games and who knows where that will leave the side in the table come the end of the season ???? |
