Dorset County Reserve League
Saturday 27th September 2008

Borough carved out a deserved win at Wincanton despite having to withstand some late pressure, Borough took the game to their hosts from the off and forced a succession of early corners, from one of these, PORTER in the 2nd minute shot over from 5yds. On 8 minutes Wincanton threatened from a free kick however the Borough defence held firm, a pattern that was to be followed throughout the game.

On 10 minutes a corner for Borough by MULVEY was nodded on across the box, the ball eventually found DE BENEDICTUS who volleyed the ball in. 1-0. Once again further chances were created, WOLDON went close with a header on 15 minutes, MULVEY’S shot was well saved on 28 minutes and moments later PORTER saw his effort well blocked by the Wincanton defence, back came the hosts and KNIGHT had to be alert to quickly clear when the Wincanton forward was through in the 35th minute.

However the scoreline changed in the 37th minute with the bizzarest own goal you are ever likely to see, Wincanton had a throw, it went to their defender, who under no pressure passed back to his keeper from fully 30 yards to see his pass sail over the home keeper and into the net 2-0 This appeared to stir Wincanton into action and only the linesman flag for offside in the 43rd minute deprived them of a very well worked goal.

HALF TIME WINCANTON TOWN RES Vs POOLE BOROUGH RES 0 – 2

Wincanton started, as expected, on the front foot and RUDD did well to block a shot in the 48th minute, they again beat the offside trap 2 minutes later only to see the shot dragged wide.

Borough started to step up a gear as they began to dominate the midfield exchanges, MULVEY went close on 60 minutes only to see the keeper tip over, from the resulting corner HEBDON went close. Back came Wincanton with KNIGHT tipping a shot over on 66 minutes, the game was now end to end with both defences coping very well in the face of the attacks, however on 79 minutes the Borough defence were guilty of not playing to the whistle as they clearly thought the ball had gone for a goal kick, the linesmen waved play on and from the resulting cross a Wincanton forward nodded home 1-2

Wincanton now launched a series of attacks that saw the Borough defence stand firm, in the 87th minute, KNIGHT pulled off a miraculous save when a shot was deflected in front off him, he managed to adjust in mid air and tip over and away to safety, this knocked the stuffing out of Wincanton and as Borough ran the clock down, MULVEY found himself clear one on one in the final minute only to see the Wincanton keeper defy him.

All in all a very good days work from the whole squad, it was very pleasing to see the whole sides determination to achieve the result, both Giles & Sean praised their side for their efforts, the key now is to keep a high level of performance for the whole 90 minutes, both managers fully believe we are yet to see the very best of the side, however it is coming and our undefeated record is still intact, a good start to the season.
