County Reserve League
Borough once again left it late to secure the 3 points with another late goal in a game they comfortably controlled but once again they created a hat full of chances only to see them go begging. Wincanton started the quicker as Borough were uncharacteristically slow out of the blocks, the opening chances went to the visitors whose shots in the 8th and 11th minutes went close. Boroughs first meaningfull attempt fell to HOLBERT in the 15th minute when his first time shot was turned round the post for a corner, from the resulting corner, HEBDON headed over when well placed. Borough started to get control of the game but too many times were guilty of trying to complicate their play by over passing the ball only to see Wincanton break play up. GRIFFIN defended well in the 33rd minute when denying a Wincanton forward any space to get his shot away. MULVEYS free kick in the 41st minute drew another top notch save from the visiting keeper who tipped the ball over, again the resulting corner amounted to nothing as Wincantons defence held firm. HALF TIME POOLE BOROUGH RES 0,WINCANTON TOWN RES 0. The half time team talk centered on patience and believing a result could be achieved, Giles quoted It may take until the 89th minute to score and so it nearly proved as Borough again dominated the second passage of play only to remain frustrated for long periods. Again to the sides credit they stuck to the instructions given and did not get frustrated and try to force the play, they remained patient and got their rewards in the end. Borough started quickly and BALL emphasised this by going on a searching run, as the defence opened up in front he shot only to see his effort saved. In the 52nd minute RUDD saw his shot saved after being played in by HOLBERT. Boroughs defence had to remain vigilant in the 57th minute when they conceded a needless free kick close to the edge of the box, however the Wall remained tight as the shot was blocked. Back came Borough with efforts from PORTER & TOWNSEND both going close. Borough were so nearly made to pay in the 78th minute when a Wincanton forward found himself in space only to see his effort well blocked by the Borough defence, Borough stepped up the pressure in the final 10 minutes and they got their rewards when PORTERS shot in the 86th minute went in on the post to give the hosts a deserved lead 1-0. The final few minutes were played out, HEBDON receiving a yellow card for a clumsy challenge being the only action of note. Giles once again paid credit to his players for grinding out another result but has challenged his side to be more ruthless when in front of goal, he could not fault the build up play or the fact that the players are getting into scoring positions, he now wants a better end product as goal difference looks like it is going to play a part in determining the final places. The challenge has been set !!!!!! |
