Hart Poole Bay Cup
Borough Reserves came close to overcoming their Bournemouth Premier League neighbours who were bolstered by Martin Sault in their midfield, but it took two contested goals in the last 30 minutes to see Dorset Knob into the next round. Long time Borough stalwarts would have been familiar with the Branksome Rec pitch selected for the game as being home for many of the clubs matches during their first season, but the ground didnt look to have been touched in the intervening 10 years, with the surface rutted, bare of grass and already badly worn only a few weeks into the new season. However Borough had the best of the first half, going ahead with a cracking long range effort from Adam Watson, but the home side drew level just before the break. Half Time - Dorset Knob 1, Poole Borough 1. The game was more even following the restart but Borough again edged ahead after 60 minutes when a Tim Porter drive was only parried by the home keeper and Alex Gunn was first to the loose ball, pulling it back to Peter Holbert to hammer home from just inside the area. Dorset Knob pushed forward looking for a way back but the equaliser came in bizarre fashion after Sault appeared to be the only one who thought he had been impeded by Sean Hebdon just inside the area, but his protests appeared to awaken a previously impassive referee, who pointed to the penalty spot, and Sault stepped up to convert. Borough began to tire against a more physical Dorset Knob side who saw a number of chances go narrowly off target before thsy took the lead for the first time, as a right wing corner was bundled home at the far post, with the Borough defenders complaining that the ball had been helped on by a hand. With Dorset Knob content to see the clock run down, Borough had one final chance to put the game into extra time as superb through ball from Adam Watson sent Porter into space and his low drive beat the keepers dive, but want narrowly wide of the right hand post |
