League Division 1 Déjà vu springs to mind as Borough took until the second half before they really got going in a game that on another day, they should have been 4 or 5 down at half time. However luckily for Borough, Ferndown left their shooting boots in the dressing room as poor finishing and superb keeping from HIGGINS kept Borough in the game, and as happens many times in football, Borough took their chance when it presented itself in a tough first half. Played on a good surface Borough knew they would be in for a hard game and so it proved as Ferndown played some neat football in the first half especially, the tempo to the game was high, HIGGINS was called into action in the 4th minute when tipping over an effort. On 13 minutes the Ferndown forward cut in and shot which cannoned back of the bar. Moments later the same player squandered another chance when HIGGINS again saved well. On 25 minutes the same player blasted over when well placed. Borough started to get into the game and created a chance that saw PORTER go close on 28 minutes. HEBDON defended well in the 31st minute when a Ferndown player was well placed and minutes later and PORTER saw a chance blocked with the rebound further blocked. However the lead was secured when against the run of play Borough launched an attack down the left, good work from DE BEN saw his cross find KENDRICK at the far post to knock home. 1-0. Goals win matches and Borough who were decidedly second best in the first half took their chance whist the home side who played some good football squandered theirs its a funny old game !!!! HALF-TIME Ferndown Town 0-1 Borough Once again Borough came out for the second half with their ears ringing and, once again to their credit, they were vastly improved as they were the better side by far as Ferndown couldnt keep up their tempo and work rate with PORTER going close in the 48th minute. WATSON picked up a yellow card in the 53rd minute as the midfield battle heated up, again Ferndown went close in the 58th minute and again HIGGINS saved well. The game changed for the worse on 67 minutes when the referee sent off a Ferndown player for a supposed 2 footed challenge on DE BEN, this decision clearly incensed the home support and Manager, Borough thought the decision was harsh, however how would the home side of reacted if the roles were reversed ???? This clearly upset the home side as Borough sensed an opportunity to strike and so it came moments later when another good cross from DE BEN was slammed home by PORTER at the far post. 2-0. And so the pattern for the remainder of the game was set as Borough by now playing the better football carved out further chances for MOORE, MOLYNEAUX & PORTER whilst HIGGINS remained on top form to produce further good saves. Lets make no mistake Ferndown are a good side but Borough's determination, discipline and ultimately their finishing won the day. Although pleased to have gained the 3 points, Giles was far from happy with the start shown again by the team, the fact that our keeper was given man of the match based mainly on his first half performance, summed it up. However the second half performance warranted a positive outcome as the side played with some belief and knocked the ball about. As a group of players they know what is required - still 4 points from our first 2 games and still, just, no goals conceded is a good start.I know there is a lot better to come from my squad and I will be expecting a better first half showing next week. On a personal note, it was nice to go back to a club that I had three enjoyable seasons with many years ago. A club like Ferndown has very loyal people connected with it and without Keith, Mick and Boriss hard work, amongst others, there would probably be no Ferndown Town FC, so their Managers rantings and behaviour at the final whistle was nothing short of embarrassing !!! As a fellow manager once said to me: A persons true character is not shown in winning but how they react to losing - enough said. |
